Art galleries are generally built and used for the exhibition of different forms of visual art. They differ from museums in the fact that these visual arts are generally not owned by the art galleries unlike the museums which are generally owned by them. The most commonly displayed art objects are paintings but other than that sculpture, decorative arts, watercolors, collages, photographs, installation arts and so on. It is primarily considered as a place where one can display his creative works in the field of art. They are also used to host performances such as art or poetry readings.
They are leased by the owners and can be hired by any artist who is in need of displaying his artistic works. They are sometimes privately owned and professional galleries and are open to public at free of cost. Some galleries are also owned by a group of artist or a co operative and they can use it for specifically displaying their own works of art. Art galleries are generally concentrated in cosmopolitan cities and in places where they can manage easy real estate as because this business is not such a profitable one and is run mainly by people who are passionate about art. As they are not such a profitable business, private ownership in this business is not common and most of the galleries are owned by the state government.
Art galleries should have good lighting system which should not be too bright and not too dim as well. It should have a soothing effect on the eye and focus mainly on the visual art which is being displayed. Vanity galleries are most common which takes a certain charge from the artists themselves for displaying their piece of work. Government owned galleries are however free and do not take any extra amount of money from the artists themselves.
