Woodworkers

Woodworking is defined as the process of using wood for building making or carving something. People who use this process are commonly referred to as woodworkers. Historically woodworkers have relied on locally available woods, however advances in transport and trade has made more exotic woods available to the artisans. Wood can be classified into three types: Hardwood from broadleaf trees, softwood from coniferous trees and man-made materials like plywood etc. Today most of the furniture is made from plywood.

Woodworkers produce a wide range of objects. The wide spread use of wood can be attributed to its strength, easy availability and the easy with which it can worked on. The following craftsmen can be identified as woodworkers: Bow makers, carpenters, furniture makers, guitar makers, luthiers, millwrights among others.
Woodworking has been an important occupation through the history of mankind. Wood along with stone, mud and animal parts were the principle materials used by primitive man. Wood was used to make weapons like spears and clubs. The use of the early materials with an exception of wood has dwindled with the discovery of new materials like metals. Woods importance has increased with the march of time. Primitive man used wood for crude weapons, advanced civilizations like the Egyptians and the Chinese used wood chiefly for furniture. The Egyptians used wood inlayed with gold and copper to make coffins for their monarch. Today wood is vital for several industries, chief among them are the building, furniture and paper industry. Wood is the principle building material in cold regions like Europe and North America because of its insulating properties. The paper industry uses wood pulp as its chief raw material.

Today the excessive use of wood has lead to the serious problem of deforestations, thus it becomes important for woodworkers to judiciously use this precious natural resource.
